District 5 Final Rally Report
The weather was perfect for our final District 5 rally – cool nights and sunshine days. The leaves had not yet begun to change. A time to sit outside with friends and chat about the good times traveling and seeing old friends while making new ones. Reliving trips with each other that had taken place through the early spring and summer. Yep, 26 units 53 people from NC, SC, TN, VA, WV, GA, and Ohio gathered to have fun and fellowship.
Although the rally began on Thursday with a welcome social followed by bingo, many arrived on Tuesday for pre-rally fellowship. We signed up for the games that we wanted to play – beanbag baseball, ladder golf, and of course, joker.
Bright and early the next morning, the games began starting with beanbag baseball. The whooping and yelling got louder and louder. What fun we were all having with base hits, home runs, and oh yes, outs. The Black Ravens won first place: Sharon Garcia, Richard Hayden, Jean Varner, Bobby Crews, Nancy Lamkin, Jim Lamkin, Ed Chaplin, Ron Holley, and Phyllis Holley. Close behind were the Red Robins with 2nd place: Audrey Hayden, Marsha Daves, Bill Varner, Sue Vaughn, Paula Wyatt, Rick DeVoy, Bob Vehring, Larry Danner, and Linda Harrison. Next was Ladder Golf with some real pros. 1st place was Ed Chaplin & Phyllis Holley. 2nd place was Audrey Hayden and Fred Tipton. They really knew how to throw a ringer.
Our one day short of 4 month travelers, Sue and Marc Loibl, presented a travel slide show of their journey traveling through the southwest and southeast states headed back toward South Carolina after touring a month in Alaska. As evening approached, we prepared our covered dishes for dinner. We have some super great cooks and the variety of dishes was awesome. Good old ham with so many types of side dishes, plus yummy desserts. It was a gourmet feast. Feeling content after such a delicious meal, we presented our retirement address as District 5 Reps with a few tears. Next, we held a Joker Tournament with the winners being Rita Gerhts and Tim Sweet winning 1st place and Ron Gehrts and Ed Chaplin taking 2nd.
On Saturday after a hearty Southern breakfast, we had a free day to go shopping, touring, or just sitting with friends to talk. We came back for dinner, game awards and door prizes. The evening closed with us being recognized by the reading of cards, letters and gifts for our service as district reps.
Sunday morning, we had a continental breakfast followed by a beautiful worship service. Ron and Phyllis Holley delivered the service with a special addition of Jim Lamkin singing a couple of solo songs. The rally was closed as we prepared to travel on to our next destinations.
